The Forward Square
An open patch where every bird faces forward. The direction is recalculated whenever the uniformed penguin turns.
Colony archive · briefing 001
An orientation dossier for new observers of the Colony: its geography, rituals, vocabulary and one perfectly level expression. The Colony keeps its own records, in its own voice.
The first reliable record describes a silent bird arriving at the edge of the huddle already dressed for an inspection nobody had scheduled.
No witness remembers the tunic being issued. By sunset, its four buttons had become the Colony's most dependable points of reference. The penguin said nothing; the absence of a statement was copied, stamped and treated as guidance.
The face remained level. The minutes recorded unanimous calm.
The Colony has landmarks, although moving ice makes their names more durable than their locations.
An open patch where every bird faces forward. The direction is recalculated whenever the uniformed penguin turns.
A dark inlet shaped, according to the archive, like a regulation button. Later surveys call that generous.
The windiest point on the ice and therefore the official location for announcements too important to hear.
Visitors may observe the fiction safely by remembering that certainty is the central joke.
Stamp the imaginary register, inspect all four imaginary buttons and report that conditions are historically normal.
Consult the face. If unchanged, the weather is administratively unchanged too. Physical evidence may file an appeal.
Leave in the direction labelled forward. If two signs disagree, choose the one the other penguins are watching.
The art of looking as though the ice cracked according to plan.
A voluntary gathering whose empty places are carefully counted.
A mobile compass point located directly in front of the tunic.
The Colony's future gathering, announced first on the notice board when official channels open.
The lore is deliberately confident. The project status is deliberately plain.
